Smith Chapel United Methodist Church
Built of lumber cut and milled by Rev. Wooten and parishioner Charles Henderson, the First Presbyterian Church of Cohutta was the oldest church in which we recorded. Built in 1915, the sanctuary features stained glass in the style of Tiffany. However the church’s roots go much further back. Originally organized in 1842 the congregation grew steadily mirroring the growth of the Cohutta area.

The high ceiling, wooden pews, and sloped floor provided a wonderful back drop for the songs we captured there. We recorded Travelin’ On written by David Crawford, Unclouded Day, and Dr. Ralph Stanley’s The Darkest Hour. The church is located next to the Norfolk Southern railroad that bisects the Cohutta community. There were at least four trains that roared past while we were recording that rainy Sunday night. Somehow it worked out just right – they always came through between songs!
